چکیده

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is a plasticizer used in the manufacture of several industrial and household articles. They get easily released to the environment and may cause adverse effects to living organisms. In this study, effects of DBP on the development and fecundity of Drosophila melanogaster have been studied. 72 h larvae of D. melanogaster were exposed to 0.25 mL/L, 0.5 mL/L and 1 mL/L DBP. The percentages and times of transition from larvae to pupae and from pupae to adults were determined, and the daily mean egg number was examined using the female offspring, which had been exposed as larvae. No differences were found in the transition percentages from larvae to pupae and from pupae to adults (p > 0.05). It was found, however, that both the mean pupation and the mean maturation time were accelerated with 0.25 mL/L DBP exposures (p < 0.05). In addition, it was determined that 1 mL/L DBP exposure caused a delay in the mean pupation time (p < 0.05). Also in the 0.25 mL/L exposure group was found a statistically significant decrease in mean fecundity as compared to the control groups (p < 0.05).

Testing evolutionary hypotheses about species borders: patterns of genetic variation towards the southern borders of two rainforest Drosophila and a related habitat generalist.

Several evolutionary hypotheses help explain why only some species adapt readily to new conditions and expand distributions beyond borders, but there is limited evidence testing these hypotheses. In this study, we consider patterns of neutral (microsatellite) and quantitative genetic variation in traits in three species of Drosophila from the montium species group in eastern Australia. We found...

Desiccation resistance in four Drosophila species: sex and population effects.

Desiccation resistance and body mass were measured in multiple populations of each of four species of Drosophila: two desert endemic species (D. nigrospiracula and D. mojavensis), and two with more widespread distributions (D. melanogaster and D. pseudoobscura). While flies from the desert species were more desiccation tolerant, there was, in certain cases, significant variation in desiccation ...

Mitochondrial DNA evolution in the Montium-species subgroup of Drosophila.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction-site maps for six species (10 strains) of the Drosophila montium subgroup were established. A total of 50 restriction sites were mapped, corresponding to 1.67% of the mtDNA genome. On the basis of differences in the restriction sites, nucleotide divergence (delta) was calculated for each pair of species (strains), and phylogenetic trees were constructed by ...

Evolution of stress resistance in Drosophila : interspecific variation in tolerance to desiccation and starvation

1. The extent to which variability in desiccation resistance among ecologically diverse Drosophila species is related to their ability to resist starvation is unknown. Resistance to desiccation and starvation was measured in females and males of ecologically and phylogenetically diverse Drosophila species. 2. We measured resistance to both stressors in ecologically and phylogenetically diverse ...

Cryopreservation of Ammodendron persicum (Bunge ex Boiss.) Seeds and Evaluation of the Cryogenic Seeds under Various Conditions

Ammodendron persicum (Bunge & Boiss.)is a desert shrub specie which grows on some sand dunes and sandy areas of South Khorasan and Sistan-va-Baluchestan provinces in east of Iran. Low distribution and narrow ecological range have put this species under threat. In order to evaluate the possibility of long-term preservation of A. persicum seeds in cryogenic conditions (-196°C), the seeds of speci...
